Overview

I love the fast-paced energy of hackathons, so I rallied my friends to join me at the Tourism Technology Festival Hackathon 2023 at the Alles für den Gast fair in Salzburg.

Our challenge? Partnering with Mastercard to design an innovative solution that promotes cashless payments while supporting sustainable local tourism in Austria.

Goal

Our goal was simple: We had 24 hours to build a better prototype than the competition and deliver a killer pitch—and that’s exactly what we did.

What's a Hackathon?

Hackathons are collaborative events where teams work together to create innovative solutions to existing problems within a very short timeframe (typically 24 to 48 hours). These events often focus on specific themes or challenges and encourage creativity, teamwork, and rapid problem-solving. At the end, teams present their solutions in a competitive pitch, with the best projects often receiving awards or recognition

Our Design Process

The best way to describe our design process? An emotional rollercoaster.

A Chaotic Start

The hackathon kicked off with a flood of challenges and problem statements. Our first task? Figuring out where we had the best shot. After some debate, we landed on Mastercard’s challenge: promoting cashless payments and sustainable local tourism.

With our challenge set, we jumped straight into action—interviewing Mastercard’s representatives to uncover the real problem while running intense brainstorming sessions. And by "intense," I mean chaotic. Ideas were flying, discussions spiraled, and somehow, eight hours in, we were right where we started. No plan, no direction—just a lot of sticky notes and confusion.

A Burger to Change It All

So, how did we break out of our creative mess? We got a burger.
We stepped outside into the freezing cold, stood in line for an hour, and let our brains breathe. And then it hit us—hard. We said, "Screw it. Let’s go all in on sustainability."

Sustainability was technically a side quest in the hackathon, with a small extra prize for the most eco-friendly solution. Were we giving up on the big win? Maybe. But at that point, we just wanted to build something we actually believed in. And that changed everything.

Sleep is for the Weak

With a fresh vision, my design partner and I fired up Figma and started building—fast. No pixel-perfect details, no unnecessary features. The only goal? Make it look good enough to win over the jury in the final pitch.

As the night went on (and way too many Red Bulls in), exhaustion started to hit. Our pace slowed to a crawl, and at some point, we had to give in—a quick 4-hour recharge before the final stretch.

Pitch = Theatre

While my design partner and I were deep in Figma, the rest of the team focused on the final pitch. And we had something special planned—a sort of theater play.

It’s a trick we’ve used in previous hackathons: instead of just explaining our concept, we act it out on stage. A live demo of a typical user journey, with us as the "actors" and our app interactions playing as a video in the background. Why explain something in words when you can show it in action?

And, did it work?

The pitch was a complete success—the energy was electric and the audience was hooked. But did we take home an award? With competitors showcasing fully developed AI prototypes and next-level tech, the edge was clear.

This is us, waiting for the announcement of the winning teams →

Yes, it worked.

We couldn’t believe it—but somehow, we pulled it off. First place!

(Too bad they couldn’t provide us with high-quality images)

The Winning Idea - Greenwallet

Here’s a typical user flow for Greenwallet, as we presented it at the hackathon.

You visit a new city

Imagine you arrive in a new city, unsure of where to go or what to do. Suddenly, you get a notification and open up your Greenwallet app.

Greenwallet helps you find local shops and discounts

The app helps you discover nearby local stores, along with exclusive discounts. The twist? The app strategically guides you towards less crowded places to help combat overtourism and spread visitors more evenly across the city.

Pay wirelessly and earn bonus points

You’re in the mood for a coffee, so you follow the app’s recommendation to Caffe Schatz (where they offer two cakes for the price of one). You order your cake, pay wirelessly through the Greenwallet app, and earn bonus points for your purchase.

Use bonus points to plant trees

Your bonus points aren’t just for show—they can be donated to various good causes like planting trees to support sustainability initiatives.

As a shopowner: Greenwallet helps promote your business

Greenwallet isn’t just for consumers; it also helps shop owners by offering free advertisement and tracking their earnings. Business owners can see exactly when and how much income they’re making, helping them manage their stores more effectively.

Greenwallet: A win for everyone

In the end, Greenwallet benefits everyone:

  • Mastercard enhances their image as a sustainable payment partner.
  • Users enjoy discounts, discover hidden gems, and contribute to meaningful causes.
  • Shop owners attract more customers and benefit from greater visibility.
  • Tourism regions experience a more balanced distribution of visitors, reducing overcrowding in popular areas.

And this wasn’t the only hackathon...

I got lucky three times. Guess hackathons are officially my thing now. :)
